bshea@messengernews.net Thomas Steck, a Fort Dodge Police Department detective, was hired as the newest Webster County deputy sheriff Tuesday. Steck, who has been a Fort Dodge officer for 12 years, will begin working for the county on May 12. He fills one of two vacancies that originated with the retirements of former Sheriff Jim Stubbs and former Chief Deputy Rod Strait. Luke Fleener, then a sergeant, was elected to replace Stubbs, and he selected Derek Christie as his chief deputy. The advancement of Fleener and Christie left two vacancies. Steck will fill one. Deputy Sheriff Cody Harris, a former Fort Dodge police officer, was hired earlier this year to fill the other. ....

edecious@messengernews.net Webster County Supervisors approved an agreement for the Badger Lake Trail Loop, a Civil Service commissioner appointment and truck purchases on Tuesday. Badger Lake Trail Loop An agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation signed by supervisors confirmed the receipt of $700,000 in federal funding for the Badger Lake Trail Loop at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. “This is just the paperwork process for the loop,” said Matt Cosgrove, director of Webster County Conservation. “We received transportation enhancement dollars for this. This just says we’ll follow the guidelines to receive those funds.” The feasibility study for the trail was approved by supervisors nearly a year ago. ....

That three-member commission oversees the testing process for hiring new deputy sheriffs and promotions within the Sheriff’s Department. To meet the requirement that the commission be balanced between political parties, a Democrat or Independent is wanted. The application for the post can be found on the county government’s web site at webstercountyia.gov. On the home page, click on departments and select Board of Supervisors to find an application for boards and commissions. Applications are due by noon on Feb. 23, according to Supervisor Bob Thode. ....
