Confederate statue in Putnam County isn't only issue for residents

For longtime residents and newcomers alike, the scene was a discouraging display in a county that lags behind other counties statewide in per capita income, education, healthcare and other important areas.
For some, the monument debate is an unhelpful distraction that has outlived its relevance.
For others, the division over the statue is tied into deeper issues that also have affected the ability of the county of 74,521 residents to lift itself out of stagnation.
“To see this kind of conflict between groups, it’s disappointing to see in a little community like this,” said Larry Beaton, a fifth-generation Palatka resident and historian for the Putnam County Historical Society. “People don’t stop and think how that looks and how people perceive that, even the elected officials.” ....

Hanmi Pharmaceutical may no longer have a diabetes partner in Sanofi, but newly released results for its GLP-1 drug could move the needle for Type 2 diabetes patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease or both. Efpeglenatide reduced the risk of heart attack, stroke and death and also slowed the decline in patients’ kidney function, new data show.
The treatment, once partnered with Sanofi, reduced the risk of nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke or death from cardiovascular or undetermined causes by 27% compared to placebo. It also reduced the risk of kidney disease by 33%. ....

A report on local health finds nearly one in five Iowa households do not have broadband access.
The report, from the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute, uses more than 30 measures like adult obesity and air quality to rank counties on their overall health.
Researcher Anne Roubal says internet access helps people apply for jobs and stay socially connected for their mental health during the pandemic. “And then also just access basic health care things like telehealth, especially in rural or even frontier areas across our nation,” Roubal says. ....

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ - Almost half of all new COVID-19 infections in the United States (44%) are stemming from five states – New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan.
The Garden State’s COVID activity level was elevated from the moderate to high risk level over the past few days, and this week’s meeting of Hunterdon County’s governing body was impacted by the alarming new rise in COVID cases.
Hunterdon County Health Officer Karen DeMarco called into Tuesday’s Board of County Commissioners’ meeting, as she and board director Susan Soloway both noted that in early April the decision was made to take a step back from in-person county meetings in Flemington. Despite having most meetings over the last six months at the Hunterdon County Courthouse with a limited audience, the April 6 meeting was held only via teleconference. ....
