Author
With economic activity and the market in general seeing a decline amid the second wave of COVID pandemic in India, it seems like people have gone back to how things were during the first lockdown, as transactions and payments  went for a dip. In simple terms, a report released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that payments through all forms, from Unified Payment Interface (UPI) to cash and NEFT transactions, have seen a sharp decline in the month of May.
As per the report, IMPS (real-time bank transactions), FasTag, and UPI, which are under the control of the National Payments Corporation of India, were amid the gateways which saw a significant decline, as were the RTGS and NEFT transaction gateways (which are mostly used for transferring large sums in business) run by the RBI itself. Google will stop on-boarding new recurring payment customers on its Android Play Store, as the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) new recurring payment rules come into effect from September this year. In an email to developers, Google said that free trials and introductory pricing should be removed from apps and from any user communication “until the ecosystem challenges are addressed.” MediaNama has seen a copy of the email.
Back in August 2019, the RBI issued a new framework for managing auto-debit or recurring transactions that are created through electronic mandates or e-mandates. An e-mandate is an electronic instruction to a bank/card issuer to debit a card or bank account for a specific amount every month towards a specific merchant or business. These are used for insurance payments, mutual fund contributions, subscription services and other recurring payment use-cases. ....

Regulatory system needs a rethink after data breaches at Juspay and MobiKwik, say experts

The fintech and startup ecosystem that has emerged in recent years has a major governance issue: data breaches and leaks are not taken seriously. Unfortunately, the regulatory system has not woken up to the fact that the recent data breaches at Juspay and MobiKwik can significantly cause harm to idle users in the future.
The Indian government is yet to introduce a Personal Data Protection Law (PDP Law) in Parliament at a time when incidents of data breaches and personal information being sold on the darkweb are increasing year-on-year. The lack of a Data Protection Authority and a Personal Data Protection Law means that there is regulatory ambiguity in terms of who should respond to breaches and investigate them. Industry experts told MediaNama that the entire regulatory system needs to be strengthened, business models need a rethink and that companies need to be made more accountable, whether through the courts or through internal governance practices. ....
