Traditional Spanish Market | Spanish Colonial Arts Society


This year’s Traditional Spanish Market on the Santa Fe Plaza and surrounding streets is a go for Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25. There will not be a preview or awards competition this year, however. Learn more about this year’s market here.
This market was first held in Santa Fe in 1926. Rigorous standards were developed to ensure that Spanish Market artists participated in regional Hispanic heritage and they were juried into art categories that represent the established traditional arts and crafts of New Mexico and southern Colorado. Today, there are nineteen art categories with approximately 200 adult artists working within them. ....

Finding solace in the pandemic, Federico Prudencio prepares for Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe

Prudencio will be wrapping his angels in bubble wrap to prepare them for this year’s Traditional Spanish Market on Saturday, July 24, and Sunday, July 25, on the Santa Fe Plaza. The annual event was canceled last year because of COVID-19. There will be no awards or preview. Past markets have averaged 70,000 visitors. This year about two-thirds of the artists have signed up.
Prudencio began carving at the age of 9 in Taos. His older brother-in-law taught him the basics of wood working. He took a wood shop class in ninth grade; his natural affinity with a blade and a chisel landed him a wood shop job a year later. ....
