Military veteran and author Oliver North visits New Bern on April 11

Decorated Vietnam veteran and retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North will bring a family military history to Sunday s closing 1 p.m. ceremony for the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall at New Bern s Lawson Creek Park.
North is the keynote speaker, capping the wall’s six-day stay in New Bern. Also, the All Veteran Parachute Team of former Army Golden Knights members, led by Michael Elliott, will parachute onto the site with flags and visual fanfare.
The public showing for the wall will end at 3 p.m. North will also speak at two morning services on April 11 at Temple Church.
His military life dates most of his 77 years, from being the son of a retired wartime Army officer and Boy Scout leader, to his combat duty as a Vietnam platoon leader and his later rise to national attention as a television military correspondent and his involvement in the controversial 1980s Iran-Contra affair. ....

Six inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame

A native of Arkansas, Rick Cartwright joined the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture in 1992 after earning his Ph.D in plant pathology from University of California Davis. He earned international recognition as a rice pathologist and served as interim head of the plant pathology department, and then the associate director of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the university.
He was named interim director of extension in 2016 and senior associate vice president for agriculture-extension for the UA Division of Agriculture in 2017. He retired June 30, 2020.
He has earned a number of awards including most recently the John White Outstanding Extension State Education Award in 2000 and received the National Distinguished Rice Research and Education Award in 2004 from the Rice Technical Working Group. ....
