How Summer Enrichment Programs Lifted Birmingham City Students

As a former teacher and a principal, Birmingham Schools Superintendent (BCS) Mark Sullivan, Ed.D., knows about the summer slide, which occurs when students are out of school and lose much of what they’ve learned the previous year “particularly among minority students and students who have low socioeconomic status,” he said.
“Typically, [those students] are not engaged in some activity because some activities can be expensive for parents paying for summer camps,” Sullivan added, noting that some of the challenges families faced during the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to some of the steepest learning loses faced by educators and teachers in years. ....

Free concert series returning to Allegan this sumer

ALLEGAN Rollin on the River will return to downtown Allegan in 2021.
The free summer concert series will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, June 11, and continue weekly until Friday, Aug. 27. Each concert spans two hours at Riverfront Park.
Returning performers at the series, which was canceled amid COVID regulations in 2020, include Asamu Johnson and the Associates of the Blues, Guitar Up and Hollywood Makeout. Bands new to Allegan include The Bootstrap Boys, Modern Adventures and The Hacky Turtles.
With the creation of downtown Allegan s new social district, alcoholic beverages may be purchased at participating establishments and enjoyed throughout the designated area which includes Riverfront Park. Two food services along the riverfront will offer window service. ....

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Rollin’ on the River will return to downtown Allegan this summer, according to a news release Friday.
The free summer concert series begins Friday, June 11 and continues for every week for 12 weeks until Friday, Aug. 27.

Live music starts at 7 p.m. and continues for two hours.

We talked with these students about their specific research focus and how they hope other academic institutions, especially those lacking Brown University’s rich array of resources, can benefit from the video.
What surprised you – or what did you learn – in your research for the Campus Playbook video presentation?
Fiona: The thermal efficiency project, which updates the campus’ 1950-era central heating system to eventually become all-electric, was one of Brown’s first steps toward achieving its 2040 Net Zero goal. I was surprised by how important these updates are and now much a university or institution can save by merely updating what they normally do, but doing so efficiently. For example, National Grid heavily subsidizes efficiency upgrades; this has saved Brown University upwards of $1M, with more savings in the long-term. ....
