The Barbados Association of Journalists and Media Workers (BARJAM) is questioning a decision by Starcom Network Inc to part ways with its president, Keith Goddard.
Sources at the River Road, St Michael organisation revealed that during a recent meeting with top management, the senior journalist was informed that his services would no longer be required.
Barbados TODAY understands that during a meeting in late April, newsroom staff were informed of the company’s intention to promote Goddard, a senior freelance reporter and two junior reporters to staff-level newsroom positions.
Another senior staffer was also offered a new role but the terms seemed more unfavourable when compared with the existing position. Sources say Goddard raised some concern about the impact of the move on the livelihood of his colleague and the smooth functioning of the newsroom. ....

Free access to information - for the public good

On this World Press Freedom Day 2021 and as we reflect on the theme Access to Information as a Public Good, I thought it instructive to share with the public – particularly media workers – insights into a 2008 draft Freedom of Information Bill, which after 13 years remains mere words on paper.
That bill was introduced by the former Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Government of late Prime Minister David Thompson and when he died on October 23, 2010, the proposed legislation continued to make the rounds within the public service under his successor, Freundel Stuart.
All indications suggest that Thompson may have had a special interest in ensuring that a Freedom of Information Bill became law in an expeditious manner to the extent that the processes involving it were managed by his office. ....

In advance of May 3, World Press Freedom Day, U.S. Embassy Bridgetown partnered with Barbados journalists and the Caribbean Investigative Journalism Network (CIJN) to celebrate the importance of a free press as an indispensable component of any free society. To mark the occasion, the Embassy hosted a three-day virtual investigative journalism workshop for over fifty Caribbean journalists. Recently-elected President of the Barbados Association of Journalists and Media Workers (BARJAM) Keith Goddard, who participated in the program, said, “The training provided very useful insights into the approaches of handling investigative journalism from highly respected persons in their fields.” Kiran Maharaj, President of the Media Institute of the Caribbean, the parent organization of the CIJN, and facilitator of the workshop, thanked the U.S. Embassy for its support and highlighted the need for more training.
