Colorado Springs Utilities joins Southwest Power Pool's western market | News

Colorado Springs Utilities announced it will join Southwest Power Poolâs Western Energy Imbalance Service Market in April 2022 and will join other western utilities in evaluating membership in SPPâs regional transmission organization.
According to a Utilities-issued news release, SPP Inc. is a regional transmission organization: a not-for-profit corporation mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to ensure reliable supplies of power, adequate transmission infrastructure and competitive wholesale electricity prices on behalf of its members. SPP manages the electric grid across 17 central and western U.S. states and provides energy services on a contract basis to customers in both the Eastern and Western Interconnections. The companyâs headquarters are in Little Rock, Arkansas. ....

Q&A: What was behind Nebraska's rolling blackouts? Why did an outside group decide?

Nebraskaâs publicly owned utilities generated more power than their customers used during this weekâs brutal cold snap in the countryâs midsection.
But energy experts say the targeted rolling blackouts criticized by Gov. Pete Ricketts prevented Nebraska and other states from catastrophic failure of a shared electricity grid.
Those cuts, dictated by the Arkansas-based Southwest Power Pool, likely prevented Nebraskans from living the nightmare facing Texas, where millions went without power for days.
The World-Herald spoke with energy experts, utility leaders and others about what happened, why it happened and what might prevent a repeat occurrence.
