This week, the Senate heard just over 160 House bills, bringing our grand total to nearly 280 House measures considered by Thursday’s deadline.  We’ve voted on some great bills in the last couple of weeks. I want to mention some that have been of great interest.
The first two bills are legislative intervention on behalf of the citizens of Oklahoma impacted by the horrible February winter weather. As you’ll remember, the Pro Tem appointed a special Senate Energy Committee, of which I’m the vice chair, to investigate the outrageous energy price spike and possible option to mitigate those costs for utility customers. ....

When you think of notable Alabama restaurants, chances are you’ll immediately think of a Black-owned restaurant.
After all, many of the state’s oldest and most cherished restaurants are Black-owned. From Brenda’s Bar-B-Que Pit (opened in 1942) in Montgomery to Lannie’s Bar-B-Que Spot (1946) in Selma, many Black-owned restaurants have stood the test of time.
There are also many new Black-owned restaurants making waves and experimenting with all types of cuisine. Southern National not only has put Mobile on the culinary food map, but it’s also gotten attention from the James Beard Awards. Eugene’s Hot Chicken went from a food truck to a Magic City food treasure. Funnel Cake Queen in Decatur not only has hours-long waits at its drive-thru; the owner, Kenya Congress, has also paid some of her customers’ outstanding bills. Sgt. Charles J. Shaw II gets posthumous show at Bowers Museum


Brenda Matthews likes to be organized. She says it unclutters her mind. Her assortment of color-coded binders in her home and knack for archiving her father Sgt. Charles J. Shaw II’s documents proved to be useful to the public too.
“If you look at my house, you see everything is in a binder. You can trace my life all the way in a binder . it’s just a habit of mind or a hobby whatever you want to call it,” Matthews said.
In the fall, the 71-year-old approached the
Bowers Museum to see if it was interested in showing Shaw’s paraphernalia that told his life story in the military and in Santa Ana’s Little Texas. ....
