More sex please, we're British – why a 2021 post-lockdown love fest is inevitable

After a long lockdown, much of the nation have got 'the horn'

Lockdown in London, 2020. Queuing in a Costa for a takeaway coffee, I find myself staring at a random man’s hairy forearms. I imagine them coiling round my waist, pulling me close. I am a 52-year-old, newly divorced consumer journalist – the closest I got to arousal pre-lockdown was looking at a perfectly loaded dishwasher – but I have a serious (and unexpected) case of pandemic lust.
The last year and a half has been a strange one for our sex lives, whether you’ve been in a relationship or not. Singletons like me, with no fellow inmate to join them in lockdown, found themselves yearning for any form of human touch, from anyone at all, even the hairdresser. Even when restrictions started to ease, we had to make do with chilly, distanced dates and furtive texts.

Has your libido left you during lockdown?

As is often the way, when Tamsin Hewitt and her partner Simon’s first child arrived five years ago, their sex life took a back seat.
Even so, at least once a month when daughter Tessa was tucked up in bed, they’d make time for each other.
‘After six years, things like work and children get in the way of sex, but it was still important to both of us,’ says Tamsin, a 44-year-old writer from South London. ‘Quality was more important to us than quantity, and that worked perfectly well.’

How's your sex life? What the last year did to our relationships

So how was it for you, during this global pandemic? Last spring was ripe with predictions of a baby boom, recalls psychosexual therapist Amanda Barge – talk of “it’ll be like the 1970s, when we had power cuts: people just went to bed and had sex.” She says: “I don’t think it’s necessarily panned out that way.”
Turns out there is nothing arousing about a government-imposed lockdown. “We’ve had to do what we’re told,” says Barge. “It’s a bit like your parents saying, ‘You’re not going out tonight.’ It’s not hugely sexy. People got into baking, cooking, growing vegetables – again, not hugely sexy; more comforting and homely. So it’s been hard for couples to keep the erotic.”

The evolution of the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles: Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological advances

The evolution of the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles: Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological advances
The first National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-1) was conducted in Britain in 1990. It has since been carried out every 10 years and so far, there have been three surveys in which more than 45,000 people have been interviewed, making it one of the largest and most detailed scientific studies of sexual behaviour in the world. Over its 30-year history, the survey has evolved in both scope and methodology, and the disciplines represented within the team have expanded.
In this lecture, Wendy will explore the evolution of Natsal under three main themes.  The first theme concerns advances in theoretical perspectives regarding human sexuality and the fundamental question of whether, and to what extent, sexual behaviour is innate and fixed by our biology or is acquired and socially learned.  The second theme centres on conceptual factors and, in particular, the emergence of sexual health as a concept relevant to public health, and within that the transition from a focus on sexual ill-health to sexual well-being.  The third theme relates to questions of methodology and the tools we use to try and measure and understand sexuality and advance sexual health, specifically the shift from single disciplinary perspectives to multi-disciplinarity.
