Men charged in separate Tuscaloosa sexual assault cases


Two men have been arrested in separate sexual assault cases. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is asking any other potential victims to speak with detectives. 
Lee Roy Jones, 76, of Cottondale, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with first-degree rape and sex abuse of a child less than 12 years old. He was booked into jail with a $90,000 bond. 
He is accused of sexually assaulting a child, according to court documents, and the alleged victim is now an adult. 
Olimpo Flores-Uzcanga, 39, was arrested the following day and charged with first-degree rape. He was booked into jail with a $60,000 bond. 
These arrests were announced in a news release from VCU on Thursday. ....

TUSCALOOSA, AL The sexual assault section of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit on Thursday announced two unrelated arrests relating to sexual abuse of children.
Lee Roy Jones, 76, was charged Tuesday for sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old and first-degree rape. His bond was set at $90,000.
Olimpo Flores-Uzcanga, 39, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of first-degree rape. His bond was set at $60,000.
The Sexual Assault Section works alongside other community partners to support the victims, and bring these types of offenders to justice, said Captain Jack Kennedy, the unit s commander. It took a great deal of courage for these victims to come forward at this time. The investigation into the following subjects are ongoing, and both are known to have had access to children. ....

Additional charges laid against Newmarket, Ont. doctor after 9 more victims come forward

A Newmarket, Ont. doctor is facing additional sex assault charges after nine more victims, including a 14-year-old girl, have come forward.
According to police, an investigation began on Jan. 29 after a 37-year-old woman contacted authorities to say she had been sexually assaulted by a doctor during a visit to a medical clinic on Davis Drive.
A 68-year-old suspect identified as Dr. Sam Naghibi was taken into custody and charged in connection with the investigation.
Since then, police say that nine additional victims have come forward. In a news release issued on Friday, investigators say the reported incidents included a sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl and a sexual assault that occurred after a victim was given “a potent pain medication injection.” ....

Travis D.A. Announces New Policies to Support Rape, Abuse Survivors

Travis County District Attorney’s Office, led by
José Garza, has announced a major shift in policies and practice to better support survivors of “interpersonal violence,” including domestic abuse and sexual assault.
Announced today (Friday, Feb. 25), the new policies will go into effect immediately, though some aspects, such as a
new community advisory board, won t be finalized for another month or two. The office’s three-page announcement highlights four areas of focus: Prioritize victims; ensure access to justice for all victims; collaborate with community advocates and experts; and improve transparency. Together, the changes are “designed to ensure that victims of interpersonal violence and complex trauma know that reporting their abuse or harm will not mean they are retraumatized, ignored, or accused of not being credible,” according to the announcement. ....
