PORTSMOUTH Marianne Janik knows better than most people the need to adapt to a changing environment. In a previous professional life as a National Institutes of Health scientist, she worked to save endangered species from extinction. In her current professional life, it was adaptation that pulled her through the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I studied adaptation and what animals do to survive. Only the strong succeed and the strong are the ones that adapt,” said Janik, a jewelry artist who recently opened her Calli b. brick and mortar store at 21 Daniel St. in downtown Portsmouth after years of traveling with what she calls her “boutique on the road” to arts and craft shows and fairs throughout the Northeast. ....
PORTSMOUTH Up to 40,000 people or more are expected each day of the Thunder Over New Hampshire air show on Sept. 11 and 12 at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are the featured attraction over the two-day event that is being put on by the New Hampshire Air National Guard at the 157th Air Refueling Wing located at the airport. Preservation Alliance, in announcing its 12 achievement awards statewide, cited the Carey Cottage at 400 Little Harbor Road in Portsmouth and the work done by JSA and others. Once the target of demolition, the 19th century structure is now a fully rehabilitated mixed use space that continues to stand as a prime example of what is called the “arts and crafts” style made famous by Boston architect Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. (1854-1934). Preceding the state Preservation Alliance s recognition, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New Hampshire gave its 2021 Rick and Duffy Monahon Merit Award for Design Excellence in Architectural Restoration and Preservation to JSA for its Carey Cottage work. ....
PORTSMOUTH - Single-family homes and residential condos in Rockingham County reached their highest median prices in April, making the county the priciest place to buy property in New Hampshire. April’s sales trends from the New Hampshire Association of Realtors show the median price of a single-family home in the county reached $471,500, while the median price of a condo reached $380,000. Meanwhile on the Seacoast, a record for condo sales was also broken with the Portsmouth-based Seacoast Board of Realtors reporting the median price of a unit in the region was $459,100 in April, eclipsing the old record of $424,900 set in December. The median price of a house in the region was $567,000, well-off January’s record of $590,000. ....
