Bob Gibson Ninety-seven years ago, in 1924, when Charlottesville dedicated its Robert E. Lee statue, the Ku Klux Klan threw a giant parade in celebration. This July 10, when the city took down the Lee statue, local residents in attendance cheered its removal. Many Virginians were never taught how strong the white supremacist Klan had been in Charlottesville and across Virginia when Lee was deified and his bronze monument unveiled. Historian Michael Beschloss, commenting last weekend on the Lee statueâs removal, noted that its installation took place after the Klan âheld a celebratory parade there with an immense throng of spectators.â ....

Katherine Knott The (Charlottesville) Daily Progress CHARLOTTESVILLE â Charlottesville s Confederate statues will come down Saturday morning, a historic moment that city officials shrouded in secrecy all week. A company contracted to install temporary fencing began its work Friday morning, hours before the city announced early Friday afternoon that the statues of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas âStonewallâ Jackson would come down Saturday. City workers also had begun to cut shrubbery and trees to allow for the removal, but city leaders had remained mum on plans for the removal of the controversial statues. City officials did not answer questions about why the move was hushed and rushed. ....
The Roanoke Times Striking UAW members were set up outside the Volvo Trucks North America plant in Pulaski County earlier this year. The plant is one of the largest private sector employers in the region, with about 3,300 employees. Unionized workers at the Volvo Trucks North America plant in Dublin rejected a third tentative agreement with the company Friday. About 2,900 of the plant s more than 3,000 employees are members of United Auto Workers Local 2069. They ve been on strike since June 7 and voted on a tentative agreement Friday. Workers will continue to strike, according to a UAW news release. Union members receive $275 a week to staff picket lines around the plant, and they get health coverage through the union. ....
