Birmingham prepares for 2022 South Old Woodward Avenue reconstruction

The third 2022 phase means new underground infrastructure and streetscaping.
Similar to the first two phases, design features will include:
Curb bump-outs at intersections to improve crosswalks for pedestrians, mid-block crosswalks, raised planter beds and landscape features;
Enhancements such as exposed aggregate concrete, granite bench seating areas, new streetlights, and cellphone charging stations.
Improved on-street accessible parking spaces, each served with an individual sidewalk ramp to create better conditions for those needing accommodations.
Birmingham officials are encouraging residents and businesses to sign up for the South Old Woodward Reconstruction Phase 3 Constant Contact group at bit.ly/bhamnews so they can receive updates throughout the project.

Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library will not charge overdue fines on returned books

Birmingham's Baldwin Public Library will not charge overdue fines on returned books
To support the community’s love for reading, Birmingham’s Baldwin Public Library is now being advertised as a fine-free institution.
The 300 Merrill St. locale for local bibliophiles stopped charging, as of July 1, overdue fines for materials that came back to the library after their due dates.
The library also has removed historic overdue fines from patrons’ records.
Nosy Nellies should beware: Library officials aren’t saying how many patrons were cleared or which titles were tied to the biggest overdue bills.
They’re more interested in watching lost-but-not-forgotten patrons return to browse their stacks and check out books than they are in detailing what may have grown into punishing and prohibitive fines.

Residents argue over multifamily housing in master plan draft

Residents argue over multifamily housing in master plan draft
Some residents have pushed back against a recommendation from the Birmingham Planning Board that multifamily housing developments be added to the 2040 master plan.

BIRMINGHAM — During a virtual meeting Feb. 10, the Birmingham Planning Board reviewed elements of the first draft of the city’s new proposed master plan.
While several items were mentioned, including a new neighborhood organization system and a revisit of some speed limits on residential streets, there was really one aspect of the plan community members focused on: multifamily housing.
Included in the board’s recommendations is a zhuzh to future land use designations downtown, in the Triangle District and at the edge of some neighborhoods that would allow, potentially, for more multifamily housing developments.

But he’s certainly not gone for good.
To celebrate his retirement, the library’s board of directors announced a new endowment fund named for Koschik. The money collected will be used to support improvements to the historical building in perpetuity.
Initial donations to the endowment have reached close to $11,000.

Birmingham leaders ready for capital improvements in 2021

Birmingham’s new yet notably experienced City Manager Tom Markus is getting a kick out of running into new and old friends, employees and supporters.
He was city manager for Birmingham, one of Michigan’s wealthier communities, from 1989 to 2010, and recently returned to the power position after more years of city management in both Iowa and Kansas.
“Birmingham is an exceptional community that has managed its affairs very well,” Markus said. “We have a number of boards and commissions with engaged citizens.  I’m confident that we will rebound (from the pandemic) quite well.
"It’s great to be back.”

Plum Community Library has a new director, online programs

Plum Community Library enters the new year with a new director and more virtual programming.
Pam Calfo of Pittsburgh’s North Side has taken over for Marilyn Klingensmith, who retired as director little more than a month ago.
Calfo was welcomed to the library in November and formally took the reins in December.
“Plum’s an excellent community, and I’m really happy to be a part of it,” she said. “The staff here are fantastic to work with, and they’ve really taught me a lot in the past month. I think there are a lot of opportunities moving forward to really connect with the community and to be able offer programming and continue our curbside service.”
