Poor Indian girl Pallavi Sharma: She cracked J-K Bank Probationary Officer exam against all odds. [Courtesy]
Pallavi Sharma, hailing from Jib village of Jammu and Kashmir s Udhampur district, belonging to an extremely poor family, cracked the J-K Bank Probationary Officer (PO) exam, the result for which was declared earlier this month, without any coaching and brought laurels to not only her family but the entire district.
Ashu Sharma, Member, District Development Council  Tikri, Udhampur, said, Pallavi has qualified Bank PO exam without any coaching. She belongs to a very ordinary family. She has brought laurels to not only her family but also to the village. We thank her for bringing a good name to our village. She has shown the determination of realising her dreams. Marjorie is a Research Assistant in the Gender Violence & Health Centre at LSHTM. She is Coordinator of the Collaboration on Infidelity, Romantic Jealousy and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), which brings together partners from around the globe to better understand the mechanisms and pathways between infidelity, romantic jealousy, and IPV. She also supports research and dissemination for the Learning Initiative on Norms, Exploitation and Abuse (LINEA) project, a global initiative on how social norms can be used to prevent the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
Prior to this position she supported the writing of evidence-based health policy reports at the Insitutue of Medicine in Washington, DC. She holds an MSc in Public Health from LSHTM and a BA in Psychology from Lewis & Clark College. For her MSc dissertation she conducted a qualitative analysis of parental perceptions of transactional sex in Uganda. ....

'Climate dividends' can help cut emissions and poverty, researchers say

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Handing 5% of the money rich nations raise from carbon emissions charges to Sub-Saharan Africa would counter the impact of rising prices on the world’s poorest people, researchers said on Tuesday.
More and more wealthy countries are seeking to impose emissions charges on companies, but doing so risks pushing up the price of essential goods, which hits the poor hardest, said a study published in the journal Nature Communications.
The researchers said that risk could be mitigated by handing the proceeds to households in the form of “climate dividends” and donating 5% to the poorest countries. ....
