The Day - Food drive to be held Friday in honor of Brian Dagle - News from southeastern Connecticut

East Lyme Five years ago, Ann Dagle dropped off some money at The Shack and Flanders Donut & Bake Shop with notes saying to please use the money to pay it forward with free meals in honor of her late son, Brian, on his birthday.
She had been struggling with what to do on that day, when she thought to herself, What would Brian be doing? She said he d probably be at The Shack having his favorite breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes and corned beef hash, which he used to have before lacrosse or football, or having donuts at Flanders.
The idea took off, with people also contributing to pay for other people s meals, and the pay it forward  event became a tradition on Brian s birthday, which is April 2. ....

Building an On-ramp for Catalytic Capital to Reduce Plastic Leakage: Q&A with Circulate Capital’s April Crow
Back in 2005, as a part of the Coca-Cola Company Environmental Team, April Crow was a pioneer working on the concept of sustainable packaging. In the mid-2000s, despite stories on the great pacific garbage patch, ocean plastic waste was not high on policy or corporate agendas. April believed this was due to a lack of scientific data on the scale and threat of plastic waste. To fill this gap, April’s team partnered with Ocean Conservancy to convene leading scientists to help fill these knowledge gaps. Their research found the majority of marine plastic pollution stemmed from five Asian countries that lacked waste management infrastructure, which if fully in place, could reduce leakage by 45 percent. This insight raised a challenging question how can companies and aid agencies bring funding to these markets to facilitate better infrastructure and prevent plastic leaka ....

Sex Worker Advocates Launch New Challenge to Prostitution Laws

While the new law was supposed to be reviewed five years after it was put in place, that still has not happened.
And the Trudeau Liberals, despite promising to repeal the law during the 2015 election campaign, have left the Harper-era law in place.
The constitutional challenge announced this week calls for the court to strike down sex work law prohibitions against impeding traffic, public communication, purchasing, materially benefiting, recruiting and advertising sexual services.
The alliance is arguing those Criminal Code prohibitions “violate sex workers’ constitutional rights to security, autonomy, life, liberty, free expression, free association and equality.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how sex workers are shut out of many parts of society. Sex workers have seen their incomes drop but haven’t been able to collect income replacement benefits like the Canada Emergency Response Benefit because their work is illegal. ....
