The 2016 NHL Draft saw the New Jersey Devils take nine players, acquire Beau Bennett, and ultimately get a lot of value for who they took. Now that five years has past, let us look back to evaluate how the Devils did with that draft. ....
Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images Yesterday, I wrote at length about the many New Jersey Devils players within the organization who will become free agents this Summer. With 14 pending restricted free agents and 9 pending unrestricted free agents, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald will need to make some difficult decisions in terms of the roster. While most of those pending RFAs will return, how much and how long their new contracts will be of a concern for the near future. I would go as far as to say that next Summer should be in Fitzgerald’s mind when he makes any signing, minor, cheap, or otherwise. This is because the 2022 offseason could end up being one of the most expensive in recent franchise history. ....
Seattle Expansion Draft Series: Article 12 - New Jersey and New York Islanders Minnesota section by Matt Smith Share this story Welcome back to our Seattle Expansion Draft Series. If you haven’t read the first article that lays out the rules of the expansion draft, that would be a good starting point, as I’ll only give the very basic rules in each of these follow up articles. If you are interested in Detroit, that was the I’m going to take a look at either one or two other NHL teams each week. My goal is to get some input from people who cover the team because let’s face it, I don’t have the knowledge of each NHL team to be able to give you the best idea of what to expect. Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images Mythbusters was a rather popular show about people taking myths and determining whether they were actually true or not through experimentation. Among its contributions is this brilliant line by one of the hosts, Adam Savage: “Failure is always an option.” Savage has explained that it is more than a cute line. It described the show’s approach to the scientific method. That it is possible that whatever you try will not work and one must know that. This tagline is also the best way I can charitably sum up the mindset of every pessimistic sports fan of their favorite team. It is also how I am approaching this post. The optimists had their time in the Sun yesterday. Today, it is time for the other side. One that can reasonably argue that the 2021-22 Devils can be a Bad Team just like they were last season. ....
Photo by Elsa/Getty Images The 2021 New Jersey Devils were a Bad Team. They have finished in a worse position this season (29th) than they did last season (26th). They ran through a compressed regular season schedule in an incredibly tough division, suffered a Coronavirus outbreak that surely impacted player performance and compressed the schedule further, performed terribly on special teams, dropped all shootouts, turned the Rock into Fort Rarelywin, hung their goaltenders out to dry more often than not, and were effectively out of the playoff race in the third month of the season. Achieving mediocrity would have required a massive upgrades in most aspects in the game. ....
