The hidden epidemic of male suicide is growing worse, intersecting with escalating deaths from opioid overdoses.
“There’s a silent crisis in men’s health that’s killing men in staggering numbers,” said Prof. John Ogrodniczuk, director of the psychotherapy program in the psychiatry department at UBC. “It’s not cancer, it’s not heart disease, it’s not liver disease — it’s suicide. When you look at the numbers, it’s like ‘Wow.’ ”

The pandemic has laid bare cracks in B.C.’s long-term care system, exacerbated the mental health and addiction crisis, and exposed racial and gender inequality problems the NDP government is under pressure to tackle in its first budget since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.
Finance Minister Selina Robinson, who will unveil the government’s spending priorities on Tuesday, has said the New Democrats needed two months beyond the usual February budget date to truly understand the scope of the pandemic.

A controversial pitch for the BC budget: Make mental health care free


Furstenau is pushing the idea, with the support of the BC Psychological Association, on the eve of an April 20 provincial budget in which the governing BC NDP has indicated more help for mental health is coming.
“Just like any other ailment that we might experience with our health, if we are in need of mental health support from a professional we should be able to access that in the same way that we access health care for any other part of our body,” said Furstenau.
“Over 13 months into a pandemic, I don’t think a single one of us can say we haven’t had impacts to our mental health from this last year. And that even eight to 10 months ago, experts were saying there will be a shadow pandemic on the other side of COVID-19, and that will be a mental health pandemic.” ....
