Vaccines likely to protect against high summer case counts in Aspen area

Local public health officials do not think that large numbers of visitors to Aspen and Pitkin County this summer will result in sky-high numbers of COVID-19 cases like it did over the winter.
While large numbers of visitors yielded increased local case counts in December and January, public health did not see a corresponding rise in cases when large spring break crowds descended in late February and March, said Josh Vance, Pitkin County epidemiologist. ....

Catherine Bernard, Aspen Valley Hospital’s chief of medical staff, remembers how that week played out in the emergency department.
“We were frightened,” she said. “Despite our training and our systems, the frontline workers were scared.”
With precautions and adaptations, they were able to overcome that initial fear. Time and experience made the situation a bit more manageable.
“It was a jump into the very cold deep end,” Bernard said. “It felt like in March, we saw very sick patients. I specifically saw very sick patients – some of them much older than me, and some of them even colleagues. That really brings it home and makes it very frightening.” ....

Ski for the Pass fundraiser, race will be scaled-back due to the pandemic

Annual fundraiser supports the Independence Pass Foundation

The Independence Pass Foundation has received a green light to host a scaled down Ski for the Pass event Feb. 14, according to executive director Karin Teague.
The Pitkin County Public Health Department has approved an event for 50 people, Teague said Monday. They will participate in a staggered start at 30-second intervals beginning at 10 a.m.
Start times will be emailed to participants and posted on the Ute Mountaineer’s website the day prior to the event. Race bibs, which will contain start times, will be available at the Ute Mountaineer on Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the race start. ....
