Thursday, March 11, the National Kidney Foundation s (NKF) national public awareness campaign,
Are You the 33%? , asks all Americans to take action with a simple, one-minute quiz at MinuteForYourKidneys.org to find out if they re at risk for kidney disease. The campaign, originally launched in March 2020, now includes a new joint initiative launched with Bayer and award-winning actress Debbie Allen which focuses on the connection between type 2 diabetes (T2D) as a leading cause of kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney disease (CKD). This campaign aims to empower people to know their kidney risk, understand the importance of managing their blood sugar for good kidney health, and talk to their doctors about diabetes and kidney disease. To further commemorate World Kidney Day 2021, landmarks and buildings nationwide will turn orange, the signature color for kidney disease. ....

Pittsburgh City-County Building lit for Pride Month Nearly nine months after Pittsburgh City Council voted to create its LGBTQIA+ Commission, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto announced appointees to the group designed to address challenges facing LGBTQIA+ residents and visitors.
On Feb. 8, Peduto named the people chosen for the LGBTQIA+ Commission, who will be introduced to Pittsburgh City Council on Feb. 9. The city originally put out a call for applicants to join the Commission in July 2020.
“This is a strong and impressive group, and will be extremely helpful in informing policies on LGBTQIA+ matters across city government,” says Peduto in a press release. ....

Pittsburgh City Council shifts over $9 million away from police, Mon Oakland Connector in proposed budget


Pittsburgh City County Building Today, Pittsburgh City Council offered amendments to Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s 2021 budget proposal. They included allocating $9.4 million dollars away from two contentious sections of the budget: police funding and the Mon-Oakland Connector autonomous vehicle/infrastructure proposal.
According to TribLive, about $5.3 million will be moved from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the Public Safety department to fund a new Stop the Violence initiative spearheaded by city councilors Ricky Burgess (D-Point Breeze) and Daniel Lavelle (D-Hill District).
The $5 million shift from the police budget is not as ambitious has some advocates were hoping, as it only represents about a 5% decrease of about $110 million overall that was proposed by the mayor.
