IHC asks district admin to produce minor brick kiln workers - Newspaper


ISLAMABAD: Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat on Thursday informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC) that 10 juvenile labourers working in a brick kiln had been moved away before a team from the district administration and police raided the site.
Mr Shafqaat appeared before IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah in response to a petition seeking recovery of the children.
The chief justice directed the district administration to produce the minor labourers before the court by Jan 2, else the chief commissioner would appear in person on the date.
Talking to Dawn, Mr Shafqaat said the district administration had made efforts for the recovery of the children. ....

The high court has taken strong exception to the practice of bonded child labour at brick kilns of the federal capital.
While enslaving children in bonded labour is banned across the country, existence of this abhorrent practice in the capital city is most alarming.
Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Athar Minallah on Wednesday presided over a case regarding child labour at brick kilns filed by Manzura Bibi.
Mahar Saifullah Lak Advocate representing the petitioner stated that her two sons were being forced to work at a brick kiln in the precincts of the Noon police station. ....

Last month, the Department of Labor added Indian sandstone to its watchlist of products potentially derived from child labor, partly as a result of reporting by the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights. The Center’s latest report, Tainted Stones: Bonded Labor and Child Labor in the India-U.S. Sandstone Supply Chain finds that the industry employs nearly three million workers but is marred by the persistence of bonded labor, intergenerational bonded labor, and child labor. Sandstone is a commonly used stone for paving and construction  likely you’ve seen some form of it in a large office lobby or outdoor installation.  ....

Revenue Department officials, on Wednesday, rescued 27 bonded labourers, native of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, engaged in construction work at the University of Agriculture and Horticultural Sciences at Iruvakki near Sagar in Shivamogga district. The workers were forced to work for low wages to clear the advances received from two people, who supply labourers for construction works.
A team of officers led by V. Prasanna Kumar, Sagar Sub-Division Assistant Commissioner, conducted the raid at the construction site and rescued the workers.
Based on a complaint filed by the Assistant Commissioner, Sagar Rural Police have registered a case. The accused Modavth Hunia and Eshwaraiah of Mehaboob Nagar in Telangana allegedly paid each person an advance ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh two years ago and brought them to Iruvakki. ....

New Delhi [India], December 16 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Ministry of Labour and Employment and others on a petition filed by a man seeking direction to the respondent authorities, to expeditiously recover the long-pending back wages of the child of the petitioner and 115 other victims of bonded labour in the national capital.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan asked the Ministry of Labour and Employment to file a reply and listed the matter for January 22 2021. ....
