Several deserted tents, a few smouldering fires and a trampled field are a far cry from the constant traffic flow on Voortrekker Road in Cape Town that runs parallel with the Wingfield military base, which scores of refugees and asylum seekers called home for the past year. 
For some, their protest journey might have come full circle with the Backlog Project, funded by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
It is just over a year since two sites, Wingfield in Maitland and Paint City in Bellville, which were erected during the hard lockdown under the Covid-19 Disaster Management Act, became temporary shelter for more than 1 5o0 refugees and asylum seekers mostly from Africa. ....

Over 153,000 asylum seekers who have been waiting many years for a decision on their applications for asylum will have their cases heard and decided, thanks to a new agreement signed today by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the Department of Home Affairs of the Republic of South Africa. The USD 9.6 million agreement (USD 2.6M from Department of Home Affairs and USD 7M from UNHCR) sets in motion a project to eliminate delays and the backlog in asylum decisions in a bid to revamp the refugee management system by 2024. ....

The Backlog Project was launched to deal with the more than 153 000 backlog of asylum seekers in South Africa. 
It will now take four years instead of the originally estimated more than 60 years. 
Of the 266 694 refugees and asylum-seekers in South Africa, two-thirds of them do not have access to the full rights and privileges of refugee status.
South Africa has been praised for including refugees and asylum seekers in its Covid-19 vaccine plans.
“The mantra that we’re only safe if everyone is safe will be manifested,” said Valentin Tapsoba, Director of the Regional Bureau for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) southern Africa. ....
