If you’re visiting Alaska this year, you may get to experience a once-in-a-lifetime geologic event. A glacier in Denali National Park has started moving between 50 to 100 times faster than normal.

Last month, a pilot flying over Denali a park home to the tallest mountain in the U.S. spotted unusual topography around Muldrow Glacier and took photos of the uneven landscape to send to a geologist friend. Using the pilot’s tip, the National Park Service confirmed that the glacier, which sits near Denali (previously known as Mt. McKinley), is experiencing what’s known as a glacial surge event. ....

Meltwater from Antarctic glaciers is changing the makeup of the region’s oceans more than previously known, a new study finds. The measurements that made these findings possible were collected by an unusual group of researchers: seals.

The study, published Friday in Communications: Earth and Environment, uses measurements of water temperature and salinity to show how glacial meltwater is changing the makeup of the ocean near the Pine Island Glacier, one of the fastest-retreating glaciers on the continent. The researchers found that the warmer, fresh meltwater was distributed in patches throughout the ocean, including portions rising near the surface. Those surface layers bring up iron and other nutrients to the top of the ocean, encouraging algae and other biomass to grow as well as keeping the ocean r ....

At least 20 people are dead and up to 125 still missing after a piece of a glacier in the Himalayas collapsed on Sunday, causing flash floods and destroying a dam in its path. Video footage shows a colossal rush of water and rocks roaring through a mountain valley in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand after a portion of the Nanda Devi Glacier broke off into a nearby river.

Many of the casualties were workers at two hydropower plants in the region, and officials said as many as 35 people are still trapped in tunnels at one of the plants further downstream. Rescue crews are hard at work attempting to free those still trapped. ....
