Facebook took an unprecedented step on Wednesday by blocking all news articles from being shared in Australia after a new law was proposed there that would require online platforms to pay news sources for displaying and linking to their work. As a result, when any of the nation’s estimated 11.4 million Facebook users go to the page of a news outlet, they see an empty feed.

The Australian Prime Minister has insisted his country will not be “intimidated by BigTech” after a proposed law compelling tech giants to pay for journalism saw Facebook block all news on its platform in Australia.
Facebook blocked the content after the Australian government’s news media code proposals passed the lower house of parliament.
Ministers are considering forcing digital businesses to reach paid-for-news agreements with media companies with draft legislation that could create a so-called News Media Bargaining Code.
The code would create an arbitration panel to set a binding price for news in situations where Google and Facebook do not reach deals with media businesses whose original journalism they link to. ....
