Increasing ocean temperature threatens Greenland's ice sheet

Irvine, Calif., Jan. 25, 2021 Scientists at the University of California, Irvine and NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have for the first time quantified how warming coastal waters are impacting individual glaciers in Greenland s fjords. Their work is the subject of a study published recently in
Science Advances.
Working under the auspices of the Oceans Melting Greenland mission for the past five years, the researchers used ships and aircraft to survey 226 glaciers in all sectors of one of Earth s largest islands. They found that 74 glaciers situated in deep, steep-walled valleys accounted for nearly half of Greenland s total ice loss between 1992 and 2017. ....

A Covid-19 outbreak has been confirmed at a Costco store in Washington state.
According to a news release from the Yakima Health District, 145 Costco employees have tested positive for Covid-19. Employees who have tested positive have completed their quarantine or isolation period, the release said.
“As Costco continues its site wide testing, we anticipate the number of cases to continue to go up over the next few days as results are received, Melissa Sixberry, director of Disease Control 3 at Yakima Health, said in the release. ....

Findings from a nationwide, retrospective cohort study from France, which compared hospitalizations and deaths from Covid-19 in the spring of 2020 to those from influenza during a seasonal outbreak the previous year, confirmed that Covid-19 is a far more serious and deadly disease.
Nearly twice as many Covid-19 hospitalizations were reported in March and April than influenza hospitalizations between Dec. 2018 and Feb. 2019, and deaths from Covid-19 were triple those reported for influenza during the respective periods.
Surprisingly, the researchers found that even though children and adolescents with Covid-19 had a lower risk for hospitalization than those with influenza, they had a higher risk for ICU admission and death. ....

Study based on French national data from 89,530 patients hospitalised with COVID-19 between 1 March and 30 April 2020 and 45,819 patients hospitalised with seasonal influenza between 1 December 2018 - 28 February 2019.
Death rate among hospitalised COVID-19 patients was three times higher than seasonal influenza (15,104/89,530 [16.9%] vs influenza 2640/45,819 [5.8%]).
More patients with COVID-19 required intensive care (14,585/89,530 [16.3%] vs influenza, 4926/45,819 [10.8%]) and the average stay in ICU with COVID-19 was nearly twice as long (15 days vs 8 days)
Fewer children aged under 18 years were hospitalised with COVID-19 compared with seasonal influenza (1227/89,530 [1.4%] vs 8942/45,819 [19.5%]), but a larger proportion of those aged under 5 years req ....
