Sunday Notes: Brandon Woodruff Ponders Pitching Backwards

May 9, 2021
Brandon Woodruff has quietly been one of the better pitchers in the National League since the start of the 2019 season. In 42 starts comprising 237 innings, the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander has 285 strikeouts to go with a 3.11 ERA and a 2.93 FIP. The last of those numbers is equal to Shane Bieber’s mark over the same period.
A big reason for Woodruff’s success is a repertoire adjustment he made midway through the 2018 season. As he explained in an article that ran here at FanGraphs last April, he began throwing both two- and four-seam fastballs. Neither is anything to write home about movement-wise, but paired together and sequenced well they’re a formidable combo. As Woodruff told me at the time, “It’s hard for the hitter to distinguish which one is going to be coming.” ....

The Baseball Hall of Fame will announce the Class of 2021 on January 26 at 5 p.m. CT on MLB Network. Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens have the best chance of getting in, but according to Ryan Thibodaux’s ballot tracker, no one is on track to get in right now.
You can see the qualifications of this year’s ballot at Baseball-Reference, but we asked our writers who they would elect to the Hall of Fame, if they had a vote.

The end of the year allows us some time to reflect and remember. Baseball lost many major figures this year, seven of them Hall of Famers - second baseman Joe Morgan, outfielder Al Kaline, Lou Brock, and pitchers Whitey Ford, Bob Gibson, Phil Niekro, and Tom Seaver. The game also lost other big figures such as Dick Allen, Tony Fernandez, Jim Wynn, Jay Johnstone, Claudell Washington, Matt Keough, Ed Farmer, Roger Moret, Tony Taylor. and Ron Perranoski. We also lost some Kansas City Athletics, including Jay Hankins, Jack McMahan, Dan Pfister, Bobby Prescott, Hal Raether, Hal Smith, and most notably, Don Larsen, who is the only pitcher to ever throw a perfect game in the World Series. ....
