The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative today released its 2021 U.S. federal priorities that focus on programs, policies and funding that are vital for the economic and environmental health of cities along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
“We applaud the Biden Administration for making economic recovery, infrastructure development and environmental issues top priorities in its first one hundred days and believe that the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative’s federal priorities fit perfectly within that agenda,” said Mayor Mike Vandersteen, Chair of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. ....

CSUS alumnus spotlight: Tim Eder

Tim Eder’s passion for the Great Lakes is clear in his words and in his work.
“The Great Lakes are my home,” says Tim. “I m from Michigan and it’s where I grew up. The Great Lakes define our state. They define our climate. They define many aspects of our economy.”
Cultivating his passion in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at MSU helped him build a career supporting the people and causes that protect the Great Lakes.
Tim is currently a program officer at the Mott Foundation. Before joining the Mott Foundation, Tim was the executive director of the Great Lakes Commission, an organization that advises the Great Lakes region’s governors and the premiers of Ontario and Quebec on sustainability issues. Prior to that, he spent almost two decades working at the National Wildlife Federation. ....

Increased threat of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes and spreading to other basins such as the Upper Mississippi River and Ohio River basins, has led to increased prevention and control efforts since 2010. Successful management of invasive species requires methods to contain future spread, reduce population levels, and minimize their effects. In collaboration with partners, USGS scientists have developed and continue to test containment and control tools and technologies, and investigate options for combined implementation of tools using an integrated adaptive management approach. Working in tandem with the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee and other organizations, an Asian carp control toolbox is being developed to enhance the ability of agencies to manage and control Asian carp to minimize their effects and spread. ....

Might sound fishy, but a new name for invasive carp could help save Great Lakes

How many people are eager to sit down to an entrée of slimehead? Or Patagonian toothfish? Or mud crabs? Or oilfish? Or, dare we even bring this up, a sushi delicacy of whore’s eggs?
Not many of us, we would guess. All those seafood entrees sound, to put it mildly, unappetizing. Please pass the peanut butter.
We’d much rather munch on more elegant fare. Give us orange roughy, Chilean sea bass, peekytoe crab, blue cod or Maine sea urchins. Perhaps with a whimsical sea shanty playing softly in the background.
