Edward Patrick Carlin, 84, of Avoca, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp.
After years of suffering, God came to Ed on July 14, 2021, and said to him, âThrow away that walker and come walk with me.â
Born in the Pittston Junction, May 29, 1937, and raised in West Avoca, he was the son of the late Michael and Ann Mallarky Carlin.
Ed was a member of Queen of The Apostles Church, Avoca. He graduated from Avoca High School in 1957, and served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961, then worked at Swanee Paper (Plainwell) in Ransom, retiring in 1999 after 36 years of employment. ....

Ice-fishing competition held in Luzerne County

WYOMING, Pa. The sun was out and it was a beautiful day to spend outside, especially for fishermen in part of Luzerne County.
Anglers of all ages took part in an ice fishing competition Saturday morning at Frances Slocum State Park near Wyoming.
There were prizes given out to those who caught the biggest bass, trout, and more.
Frances Slocum is a really interesting lake, well the bottom of it is at least. And the fish, is they like to be in certain areas and you gotta be able to pick them out, said Rory Brown of Kunkle. ....

Fishing for a Cause group brightens the holidays for Sugar Notch teen

SUGAR NOTCH â In May, 17-year-old James Scholten accidentally snapped his fishing rod during a trip to Frances Slocum State Park.
The mishap was devastating for Scholten, who has Down syndrome and other medical challenges. On the water, however, Scholtenâs focus shifts away from the medical issues to just one thing: âI want to catch a really big fish,â he said.
And he wants to do it with a fishing rod of his own.
Thanks to local charity Fishing for a Cause, Scholten is back on track toward his goal of landing a big one. Hanover Twp. resident George Bowers, who founded the charity, visited Scholten on Dec. 17 with a few early Christmas presents. In addition to a fishing rod, Scholten received his own tackle box stocked with lures and a new fishing buddy in Bowers, who also gave the family a $1,250 check to help with medical expenses. ....
