A glider, a Schleicher ASH 25 E (G-CFST) launched behind an aerotow tug from Aston Down Airfield with the intention of soaring along the Cotswold Ridge between Dursley and Broadway. The soaring conditions proved challenging and the glider became too low as it followed the ridge to the east of Cheltenham, an area with few options for a successful field landing. The glider collided with the top of a line of trees while the pilot was attempting to start the glider’s sustainer engine and trying to find a suitable place to land. After colliding with the trees, the glider struck the ground nose-first fatally injuring the pilot. The rear seat passenger received minor injuries. ....

Remembering Prince Philip's visits to north Essex over years | Harwich and Manningtree Standard


Each time he visited, he won praise for his dignity and easy manner.
The Duke first visited Colchester in 1958 alongside the Queen.
He also visited the Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club Airfield in June 1998 as patron of the British Gliding Association.
The Duke accepted an invitation to cut the ribbon to open the new £100,000 hangar in Wormingford.
He also took a tour of the clubhouse and asked for an impromptu display of gliding.
The prince had arrived at Wormingford by helicopter and was met by Lord Lieutenant of Essex Lord Braybrooke, David Rex, chairman of Essex County Council and Colchester mayor David Cannon. ....
