Scotland leads Europe in coronavirus transmission
Scotland is facing a deepening public health disaster as the Delta variant surges, resulting in record daily infections and a resurgence of hospitalisation and deaths. The country accounts for four of Europe’s top 10 COVID-19 hotspots in the last 14 days according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with the UK as whole accounting for seven regions. The other regions in the top 10 are in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Cyprus.
Tayside in northeast Scotland has the highest infection rate in Europe, with 1,223 new cases per 100,000 people recorded over the 14-day up to the July 7. Lothian, home to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, currently registers third with 1,083 cases per 100,000 behind North-East England. Greater Glasgow and Clyde had the fifth highest rate of cases with 899 per 100,000. The Scottish health boards of Fife and Lanarkshire also feature in the top 10 together with North-West England. ....

Two more hospitals have declared “code black” alerts in response to mounting numbers of coronavirus patients and absent staff members who have been forced to self-isolate.
Both Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Dr Gray s Hospital in Elgin have reached capacity and have had to to postpone non-emergency elective operations as a result of the growing pressure of rising Covid-19 cases in north-east Scotland, NHS Grampian said. ....

Lack of support for Glasgow GPs will cause health crisis

I LOVE my job as a GP and I could think of nothing else I would rather do than the job I get to do every day.
It is rewarding in ways I never imagined a job could be and I feel grateful that I get to do what I do for a living.
However, I am worried about the state of affairs for general practice right now.
I am worried about my fellow GP friends, colleagues and wider primary care staff because frankly, we are at crisis point and if something isn’t done soon, there is potential for the whole healthcare system to crumble. ....
