Council Awards SMU's Bridwell Library World Methodist Museum Collections - SMU Perkins School of Theology

DALLAS (SMU) – Bridwell Library (Perkins School of Theology and SMU Libraries) at Southern Methodist University has been named the recipient of the collections of the recently closed World Methodist Council Museum in Lake Junaluska, N.C. The announcement was made by the World Methodist Council (WMC) Archival Committee on April 1, 2021. The entire collection will be given and transferred to Bridwell Library at SMU by May 15, 2021.
“I am relieved and excited that the collection will remain intact and under the care of the Bridwell Library,” said Robert Williams, Retired General Secretary of the United Methodist Church General Commission on Archives and History, who assisted with the deaccessioning of the museum. “All who care about this collection can be confident that its future impact for faithful ministry in the Wesleyan tradition is assured.” ....

.- This year marks the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Meadows s 66,000-square-foot building, which is six times larger than the museums original space. Since its opening in 2001, the Meadows has become one of the most prominent university art museums in the country. It is internationally recognized for the quality of its collection of Spanish masterpieces by old masters to contemporary artists with one of the largest holdings of Spanish art outside of Spain. Artists represented include Velázquez, Ribera, El Greco, Murillo, Goya, Miró, Picasso and Dalí. No one knows how to party like SMU, and this spring, Meadows Museum will celebrate 20 years in its Bishop Boulevard building with not one, but two special exhibitions.
The stately Collegiate Georgian, red-brick building, designed by Chicago architectural firm Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge, opened to the public in 2001. Over the last 20 years, the new building, as some still call it, has become a prominent landmark near the Southern Methodist University campus entrance off Mockingbird Lane. It has also grown to house one of the most significant collections of Spanish Art in the United States. ....
