Jan. 17, 1889: G.B. Horton, Henry Gildersleeve, and Eugene Horton had, as of January 1, 1889, formed a co-partnership with the name of Horton, Gildersleeve & Co. The business would “continue the business heretofore conducted by Horton, Yocum & Co., as the ’Watauga’ Tannery”, according to The Comet.
Jan. 17, 1900: The Knoxville Sentinel, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported, “Geo. T. Williams, of Milligan, Tenn., and J.C. Kingsley, of Greeneville, Tenn., are at the Greenwood Hotel.”
Jan. 17, 1903: The Chattanooga News reported very tragic news, with a dateline of Johnson City. “While a number of men were at work in the sewerage ditch at the Soldiers’ Home yesterday afternoon the banks caved in on them, and one man, Sam Grooms, of North Carolina, was killed, and two others, J.J. Dec. 23, 1891: The Comet reported, “Last evening a special train went to Elizabethton and (back) to carry a party of Knights of Honor to participate in the ceremonies of instituting a new lodge at that place. Among those who came from Jonesboro and other points down the road were: E.A. Shipley, Mat Peoples, Jasper Peoples, Joe February, R.M. May, J.A.T. Bacon, A.P. Mathes and H.C. Remine of Limestone Lodge, now Deputy Grand Dictator.”
Dec. 23, 1906: The Chattanooga Sunday Times, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported, “At a recent meeting of the Johnson City and Washington County Medical society at Dr. Cox’s office, an essay on the subject of diphtheria was read by Dr. Cox and thoroughly discussed by all the doctors present. This being the last meeting of the year, the society elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Dr. E.A. Long, president; Dr. G.A. McLain, vice president; Dr. S.B. Dec. 18, 1873: The Herald and Tribune, a newspaper in Jonesborough, reported on a recent accident. “As Col. Jas. Clark, of Boon’s Creek, was returning home, last Thursday night, from this place, he was thrown from his horse, near the residence of Mr. John Keys, and had his leg broken. Dr. Gibson was called and set the broken limb.”
Dec. 18, 1884: A fire broke out in the roof of O’Brien’s Pool Hall. This structure was quickly consumed.
