KCBX s Angel Russell reports. In the past two weeks, the San Luis Obispo Regional Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team has been called in to assist in two separate barricaded suspects situations. One in Pismo Beach resulted in a peaceful arrest of the suspect, while the other in Paso Robles ended in a fatal shooting of the suspect while police were attempting arrest. The San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT team is composed of more than 30 officers from eight police departments in SLO County, including San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande. Commander of the team, SLOPD Captain Brian Amoroso, said they get called in when situations are so hazardous, complex or unusual that they may exceed the capabilities of the patrol officers on-duty to handle. ....

Detective Luca Benedetti remembered by colleagues and last updated 2021-05-11 22:44:16-04 37-year-old Luca Benedetti called the San Luis Obispo Police Department his home for the past 9 years, putting his life on the line defending the community he loved. Community members and colleagues with broken hearts reacted to his loss by presenting flowers and speaking about the presence he had as a detective and as a family man. Acting Police Chief Brian Amoroso said, âDetective Benedetti was hired by SLO PD in 2012. Prior to that, he worked for four years as a police officer with the city of Atascadero. He is survived by his wife and his two young children.â ....
San Luis Obispo police detective killed in the line of duty identified May 11, 2021 By KAREN VELIE San Luis Obispo city officials announced today the name of the detective shot and killed while serving a search warrant as 37-year-old Luca Benedetti. Shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday, six officers attempted to serve a search warrant on Edward Zamora Giron, 37, at his apartment on Camellia Court, regarding a spree of commercial burglaries. Officers knocked and announced they were there, but Giron did not open the door. After an extended amount of time, officers broke the door down to find Giron armed and lying in wait. Giron fired at the officers, who returned fire and retreated. ....
