SUNY Canton law enforcement grads find local employment

CANTON Following six months of intensive training, seven students have completed the St. Lawrence County-David Sullivan Law Enforcement Academy. Most of the graduates are beginning careers with area police agencies.
You can expect a difficult and very rewarding career ahead, said Academy Director Joseph W. Brown at an in-person graduation ceremony. You will encounter people at their most difficult times and people that are proud and appreciate what you do every day. Represent your profession with honesty and integrity. Treat people with dignity and respect.
It was the 25th year SUNY Canton held the exclusive academy, which allows cadets to enroll under sponsorship from police agencies. SUNY Canton students can also participate in pre-employment training while completing their degrees in the Criminal Justice related programs. ....

Commonwealth Court Schedules Trial For Education Funding Lawsuit

A lawsuit over how Pennsylvania funds public schools is scheduled to go to court this fall. The proceedings in Commonwealth Court are slated to begin September 9th, seven years after the suit was originally filed.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs, a group of parents, school districts, and advocacy organizations say the state government has failed to provide all students with an “adequate” education as required in the Pennsylvania constitution and that, as a result, children’s opportunities rest largely on where they live. Black and Latino students are concentrated in underfunded districts, according to research prepared for the case. ....

Pennsylvania students, school districts, and their advocates will soon have their chance in court to prove that education across the state is unfairly and inadequately funded.
On Thursday, Commonwealth Court set a tentative trial date of Sept. 9 in a case originally filed nearly seven years ago by several school districts, individual parents, the state chapter of the NAACP and the Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools against the governor, legislature, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The suit seeks changes in a funding system that has resulted in some of the largest gaps in spending among wealthy and poor school districts in the nation. ....
