LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Kansas counties are increasingly allowing people to walk in to get a coronavirus vaccine without an appointment as interest wanes.
In the Lawrence area, mass vaccination clinics at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, which had been immunizing almost 700 people per hour at their peak, are coming to an end next week. They will be replaced next month with five-day-per-week drive-thru clinics that will deliver 200 to 300 vaccinations per day to people at Lawrence Memorial Hospital without being scheduled in advance, the Lawrence Journal-World reports.
“We’re seeing that supply is now outpacing demand in Douglas County,” said Brian Bradfield, associate vice president of ancillary services for LMH Health. ....

Not only is an appointment for a COVID vaccine no longer as rare as a winning lottery ticket, but appointments soon won’t be required at all in Douglas County.
LMH Health next month will start hosting a five-day per week drive-thru clinic at the hospital that will allow people to get a vaccination without any advance appointment.
There is a simple reason vaccinations have gone from lotto to lots of them.

A hospital in Kansas was left with no choice but to discard almost 600 doses of COVID-19 vaccine due to a process error.
Health officials revealed on Thursday that the Lawrence Memorial Hospital had to throw out 570 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The vaccines came from Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health on Wednesday.

Fox News reported that the vaccines are normally delivered while they are frozen. This allows them to be placed in a freezer at the hospital until they can be distributed. However, health officials revealed that they did not realize they were already thawed. This was the revelation made in a press release by the hospital ....

A collaboration among three Lawrence organizations has resulted in a robust COVID-19 testing program aimed at finding asymptomatic cases among community members who often interact with strangers.
In December, the Lawrence Restaurant Association partnered with LMH Health and Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health to begin surveillance testing of hospitality workers. According to Emily Peterson, chair of the Lawrence Restaurant Association, 45 Lawrence businesses including restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bakeries and event spaces are now participating in the program. Those 45 businesses have around 1,100 staff members who are tested monthly. ....
