On Monday 17 May 1971, a meeting was held at the Greyhound, Leigh that included club chairmen Jack Harding (Leigh) and Ossie Davies (Warrington). Alex Murphy was also present, and just 2 days after leading Leigh to a sensational Wembley triumph over Leeds, he signed a five year deal.. to join Warrington. Ex Wire players Alan Gwilliam and Martin Dickens have died

WARRINGTON Wolves stars of the 1970s and 1960s have died within days of each other over the past week.
Alan Gwilliam, 71, who scored the winning try for The Wire against Australia at Wilderspool in 1978, and Martin Dickens, 85, a hooker whose brother Tommy also played for the club, each made over 100 appearances in primrose and blue.
Gwilliam, who hailed from St Helens, where his brother Ken also played professional rugby league, enjoyed two cup wins with Warrington in the 1980-81 season.
He partnered Ken Kelly in the halves as The Wire defeated second division Wigan 26-10 in the Lancashire Cup Final at Knowsley Road, St Helens. ....

Ron Herbert, former Warrington Wolves flyer, has died

A HOMEGROWN Warrington Wolves centre and great-grandfather has died three months shy of his 65th wedding anniversary.
Penketh resident and former Capper Neill and Laporte employee Ron Herbert, who featured over 40 times across eight seasons for The Wire alongside the likes of Brian Bevan and Gerry Helme in the 1950s, died on Good Friday at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
He would have turned 88 this coming Monday.
Ex-Crosfields amateur Ron, a former pupil of Bolton Council and Boteler Grammar schools in Latchford, attracted attention from Warrington RLFC because of his blistering speed. ....
