Ron Herbert, former Warrington Wolves flyer, has died

A HOMEGROWN Warrington Wolves centre and great-grandfather has died three months shy of his 65th wedding anniversary.
Penketh resident and former Capper Neill and Laporte employee Ron Herbert, who featured over 40 times across eight seasons for The Wire alongside the likes of Brian Bevan and Gerry Helme in the 1950s, died on Good Friday at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
He would have turned 88 this coming Monday.
Ex-Crosfields amateur Ron, a former pupil of Bolton Council and Boteler Grammar schools in Latchford, attracted attention from Warrington RLFC because of his blistering speed. ....

Vivid memories of life in industrial Warrington

EARLIER this year, we brought you some memories of growing up in Bank Quay.
Peter Cotterill shared his experiences of life against the backdrop of one of the industrial hearts of Warrington.
This week, Ken Bracegirdle has been in touch.
He lives on the Liverpool Road end of Wellfield Street from 1942 to 1967 and has fond memories.
He said: From my bedroom window I could clearly see the Sunlight sign on the factory building at Crosfields. A very short walk from home was the Coach & Horses pub & across the railway line to the Monks Hall foundry and steelworks. ....

Roger Hunt: Liverpool's 1966 England World Cup winner


IT was 65 years ago that a 17-year-old schoolboy made his debut at senior level before going on to become Warrington’s most famous footballer, writes Garry Clarke.
Destined to be a World Cup winner with England, Roger Hunt donned the colours of Stockton Heath FC (now Warrington Town) for the first time during their Mid Cheshire League encounter with Linotype on November 17, 1955.
It was not the most auspices of starts to a career which would bring many honours, including the ultimate prize in 1966.

Fifth in the table, Stockton Heath crashed to a 4-1 home defeat against league leaders Linotype in what the Warrington Guardian described as “the worst display of the season” although the article did report “one of two debutants in the Heath team, left winger Hunt had a good game”. ....
