WWII hero who survived Bataan Death March was gunned down in Virginia. 40 years later, his murder isn't forgotten - U.S.

By JOANNE KIMBERLIN | The Virginian-Pilot | Published: May 16, 2021
(Tribune News Service) It’s almost beyond belief. How does someone make it through the worst of two wars only to be gunned down on the streets of home for the few bucks in his pocket?
It’s been 40 years since the murder of Heren Cabacar, a soldier who survived the Bataan Death March of World War II and the prison camps of the Korean War.
Forty years since Portsmouth police knocked on the family’s door at 4 a.m.
Forty years since the headlines shouted “Ex-POW killed on walk home.”
Forty years of wondering who did it. And trying to make sure the crime isn’t forgotten. ....

DOD steps back from decision to disinter remains believed to be Medal of Honor recipient

By WYATT OLSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 13, 2021
A family’s decades-long quest to recover the remains of World War II’s first Medal of Honor recipient has bogged down in red tape after hopes of a quick disinterment were raised in January.
The family of 1st Lt. Alexander “Sandy” Nininger, who died in battle on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines on Jan. 12, 1942, has for years pressed the Defense Department to exhume an unknown grave in Manila they believe could hold his remains.
But Nininger’s 84-year-old nephew and closest next of kin, John Patterson, learned in late March that DPAA had recommended postponing disinterment of the gravesite, known as X-1130, a decision based on another DOD policy. ....

In 1942, Maj. Arthur Wermuth was crawling through mud to avoid a Japanese patrol marching through the jungle. The invaders had no idea he was there. When they passed, he continued crawling on the jungle floor.
His destination was a ridgeline that overlooked the nearby enemy camp. He climbed to the top of the ridge and drew out his Thompson submachine gun. He then let loose on the encampment. The Japanese, now confused and panicking, thought the Americans had slipped into their rear.
But it was only Wermuth, the “One-Man Army of Bataan.” ....

In DOD reversal, agency will analyze remains thought to be WWII's first Medal of Honor recipient - U.S.

By WYATT OLSON | STARS AND STRIPES Published: January 13, 2021
The Defense Department on Wednesday agreed to analyze remains in a Philippines grave long believed by family members to be those of Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Jr., the first service member awarded the Medal of Honor during World War II.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and its precursors had denied repeated requests by the family to exhume the remains for DNA testing, maintaining that the agency’s documentation could not validate taking that step.
“I have directed DPAA to immediately generate the necessary exception to policy in order to expeditiously execute scientific analysis of the remains to confirm or deny identification,” Anthony Tata, currently performing the duties of undersecretary of defense for policy, said in an email Wednesday sent to Defense Department officials and John Patterson, who is Nininger’s nephew and closest next of kin. ....
