As Canada Announces Border Reopening Measures Calls Intensify For U.S. To Follow Suit

Canadian officials announced on Monday measures to open the border to vaccinated travelers. While the move is being welcomed, border interests are now calling on the U.S. to reopen its ports of entry.
The U.S.-Canada border has been closed to non-essential travelers since March 2020. On Monday Canadian Health Minister Patty Hajdu reported the country is in a good position to ease border restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers because nearly 80 percent of eligible Canadians have received at least one shot and over 50 percent are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
On September 7th Canada will allow entry to fully vaccinated non-essential travelers from any country. Hajdu added before that, on August 9th, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to enter Canada. “All travelers regardless of vaccination status will still need a negative pre-departure test. However starting August 9th we will shift to a mandatory randomized testing ....

PLATTSBURGH â For months on end, north country officials have been pleading with Canada to consider allowing some cross-border traffic to resume, but they havenât had much success.
Now, with U.S. Sen. Majority Leader Charles Schumer on board, hopefully some progress can be made soon as summer is now well underway.
âFor the last two months, we havenât seen any progress and that is not acceptable,â Schumer said during a visit to Plattsburgh [July 6]. âIt is unacceptable to have no progress when summer is the season, more than any other, where we here in the north country and throughout New York state need the Canadians for our economic livelihood. And they want to come here.â ....

Battle Of Plattsburgh Organizers Announce Full Schedule Of Events This Year

The Battle of Plattsburgh is considered by some military historians as a pivotal battle in the War of 1812. The defeat of British forces on Lake Champlain and subsequent retreat by their ground forces on September 11, 1814 was a key factor in finalizing the Treaty of Ghent to end the war. Plattsburgh annually commemorates the battle and after the pandemic forced a scaled-down event in 2020, organizers are planning a more typical four-day event.
The Battle of Plattsburgh typically features a military-themed parade, battle reenactments and encampments. Memorials are held at local cemeteries that hold the remains of both U.S. and British soldiers that fought in the battles 207 years ago. Last year organizers held mostly virtual events and a few in-person memorials. 1814 Commemoration Inc. coordinates the annual event. President Tom Donahue on Wednesday said the annual Battle of Plattsburgh will return to its traditional form. ....

Plattsburgh Leaders Discuss New Compact Between City And Town

Under the city of Plattsburgh’s last mayor, Democrat Colin Read, who left office on December 31st, 2020, several actions were taken in an attempt to obtain land or money from the adjacent town of Plattsburgh. Town officials contested an annexation attempt and lawsuits over a long-term Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement. Three and a half months after the new mayor was sworn in he and the town supervisor have signed what they are calling the Plattsburgh Compact. It not only drops the lawsuits but swaps rather than annexes land between the municipalities. In the first part of an interview with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley, Mayor Chris Rosenquest and Supervisor Michael Cashman, both Democrats, explain the negotiations that led to the joint agreement. ....

A tale of two Plattsburghs: local leaders agree to resolve legal disputes amicably

“The City and the Town have come to an agreement,” Rosenquest said.
“In life, you do not always have to agree with someone 100 percent to work with them,” Cashman added.
The tenor was a marked departure from the rhetoric of recent years.
The disagreements between the City and Town had grown increasingly ugly, culminating in former city mayor Colin Read filing a lawsuit against the Town of Plattsburgh in 2018.
Read’s successor, 2020 election winner Chris Rosenquest, decided to end that challenge and called the agreement a compromise.
“We’re getting something, they’re getting something. So it really is looking at this a partnership, looking at this as collaboration for the future,” Rosenquest said. ....
