Six Degrees: Pressure Released Share this story Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports 1) Our Starting XI for Saturday night’s game against Dallas featured, for the first time in awhile, Yimmi Chara and Jeremy Ebobisse was out on the wing with Dairon Asprilla. There was no Diego Valeri at the 10, so Yimmi did his best to fill that role. There was no Eryk Williamson at the 8, so Renzo Zambrano did his best to fill that role. How did it go? Kinda shitty, actually. In the first half, at least. Yeah, all those guys tried their best – and to be honest, Yimmi and Felipe almost pulled off some cool stuff in the opening 10 minutes – but on the whole, our attack in the first half was flaccid and ineffective. Just a bunch of guys bumbling around out there. ....
Three takeaways from the Portland Timbers’ spring With the first two months of the 2021 season behind them, here’s what the Timbers can take from their first slate of matches. Share this story Photo by Diego Diaz/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The spring is now behind us, and we enter the heat of summer (Yes, I know it’s not officially summer. But it hit 80 degrees last week. That’s summer in my book). The Portland Timbers have endured a bit of a roller coaster start to their 2021 season. Last minute penalties, missed penalties, bad blowouts, a Dairon Asprilla regular season goal you name it, this season has had it thus far. It’s been rough, but the team is still fighting. ....
Around the Forest: Blake Bodily, Thorns dominance, and Concacaf Share this story Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports Welcome to Around the Forest! In this article, will bring you some of the best reads this week about the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC from this past week. We’ll even throw in a few general MLS and NWSL pieces towards the end. This week, we have the Idaho Statesman on Blake Bodily, The Equalizer on the Thorns, and Richard Farley looking ahead to next week against Club America. Timbers and Thorns Let’s start with Bodily. The Timbers homegrown made his third appearance with the club last weekend and it was a vital one. He recorded the fastest assist in an MLS debut in club history and gave the usual starters some much-needed rest against the Houston Dynamo. You can read what Michael Lycklama had to say about it here. ....
Six Degrees: First Win Share this story Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports 1) We’re gonna do something different with the first degree today. I’m gonna let you inside my brain. My mysterious, befuddling, and somewhat disturbing brain. In the last few years, since I left the TA section and entered the exciting world of reserved seating, I haven’t always arrived at Timbers games early. I mean, why show up an hour early if I don’t have to, right? But this past week, I made a point of showing up early, and was thus able to play one of my favorite games, a game I like to call “See If I Can Guess The Starting XI Based Solely On How The Players Are Warming Up.” ....
“It was not a surprise”: Role players step up to get Timbers first MLS win Share this story Photo by Steve Dykes/Getty Images The Portland Timbers beat the Houston Dynamo 2-1 last night, and it feels like a minor weight has been lifted. The Timbers officially have three points in their back pocket and did so without expending the energy of a lot of their first team players. The Dynamo aren’t the strongest team in MLS by any means, but the fact that Portland came in with a heavily rotated lineup and won bodes well for the future. ....
