Piedmont Atlanta Hosp. and LifeLink open the only organ recovery center in the state
ATLANTA (WGCL) Two medical powerhouses teamed up to open the first-of-its-kind medical center in the state.
According to Piedmont Atlanta Hospital officials, a new LifeLink Organ Recovery Center will be located within the hospital. It was created through a partnership between Piedmont Atlanta Hospital and LinkLink.
The new facility is the first organ recovery center in the state, and one of few in the nation.
The brand new, 9,588-square-foot building has two operating rooms, six ICU bays, a perfusion lab and two private rooms for donor families. ....

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) A Macon woman will a kidney transplant undergo surgery at the end of January one that she had no idea her donor was approved for.
Sylvia Harris was placed on the kidney transplant waitlist and said all she wanted was to be healthy again.
Sixty-one-year-old Sylvia Harris received a kidney failure diagnosis six years ago. Harris says she experienced none of the common symptoms of the disease: fatigue, swelling of the legs, and fluid buildup in the lungs.
“People can have advanced chronic kidney disease and still not have symptoms of kidney failure until their kidney function is very reduced,” said Dr. Christina Klein of Piedmont Transplant Institute in Atlanta. ....

New leader named at East Jefferson General Hospital
East Jefferson General Hospital has a new CEO along with its new management.

New Orleans-based LCMC Health, which added the Metairie hospital to its system this year, has announced Richard Tanzella as CEO. He fills a vacancy left by Gerald Parton, who is retiring at the end of this year.
Parton guided the financially struggling hospital into finding a private operator. Jefferson Parish voters approved the sale of the publicly-owned EJGH in August.
Tanzella will assume the role of CEO on Feb. 1, leading a staff of nearly 3,000 and managing a $100 million capital transformation, a news release said. As part of its acquisition, LCMC agreed to invest that amount in physical upgrades and technology at EJGH. ....
