PHOENIX Pima County s top prosecutor is seeking a delay in the bid by Attorney General Mark Brnovich to set an execution date for Frank Jarvis Atwood.
But in a spat that is pointing up a divergence of views on capital punishment, he is spurning her request.
In a letter to Brnovich obtained by Capitol Media Services, Laura Conover said that since taking office in January she is reviewing a number of cases, including those on death row, because of an unfortunate history of the department she said led to several disbarments and appellate cases born out of prosecutorial misconduct. ....

The man accused of killing a Gilbert group home resident Monday had recently been released from a state mental health facility where he was sentenced to life after being convicted of murdering his grandparents in 2005.
Christopher Lambeth, 36, was arrested Monday for allegedly beating his housemate to death after police responded to an unknown call for trouble near Pecos and Higley roads.
According to documents Gilbert police filed in court, officers could see Steven Howells, 49, through a window outside the home with a pool of blood around his head, not moving. ....

Man suspected of Gilbert group home murder killed grandparents in 2005

Christopher Lambeth, 36, was arrested Monday for allegedly beating his housemate to death after police responded to an unknown call for trouble near Pecos and Higley roads.
According to documents Gilbert police filed in court, officers could see Steven Howells, 49, through a window outside the home with a pool of blood around his head, not moving.
Lambeth was found in the bathroom shower washing blood off of his body.
During an interview with detectives, Lambeth admitted to punching, stomping and strangling the victim, court documents stated.
He was booked with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of second-degree murder. ....

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Pima County Superior Court is offering a second chance to some people brought before the court on low-level drug charges. The Supportive Treatment and Engagement Program, also known as STEPs, is for nonviolent individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Those who qualify will receive substance-use treatment. The drug charge is dismissed after treatment is completed.
Presiding Judge Danelle Liwski said a person with a drug charge typically waits six months to a year to be sentenced but this program is a game changer. ....

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - As a result of COVID-19, the Supreme Court of Arizona directed presiding superior court judges in each county to determine in-court proceedings in their jurisdictions under conditions to protect public health.
This allowed presiding judges in Arizona counties to determine when jury trials could safely begin, while taking into consideration the physical space of individual courthouses and courtrooms, and the public health threat of the pandemic. ....
