Wait for COVID-19 vaccine frustrates some Columbus-area schools

While some school districts have started receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, teachers and staff members in 59 of Ohio s 88 counties are still waiting their turn.
And if the vaccine schedule for school districts looks random, that s because it is in a way.
The state didn t use set criteria for making the vaccine schedule for school districts, Gov. Mike DeWine s spokesman Dan Tierney told The Dispatch last week.
There simply was not enough supply to do it in one week; therefore, we had to divide it into weeks and by nature some are going to go in Week One, some are going to go in Week Four, he said. ....

TORONTO The Toronto school board was asked Thursday to consider temporarily loosening requirements for substitute teachers to address a shortage of them during the pandemic.
Superintendent of Schools Maureen Taggart said with the passage of Ohio House Bill 409, school districts have been given flexibility in the hiring of substitute teachers for the current school year.
Taggart said as a result, candidates may not be limited to those with four-year degrees. She suggested the board consider requiring the substitutes have the minimum qualifications required of the school district’s instructional aides. ....
