Amid an Epiphany Day marred by an unanticipated insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the state’s highest COVID rates, 87-year-old Isiah Steele received his long-awaited COVID-19 vaccination at New Orleans East Hospital. “I am so blessed to have gotten this vaccine,” said Steele, before lighting a candle at the Shrine of St. Jude. “I will sleep a little easier tonight.”
Steele has been locked down in his family home since mid-March, where he has fretted about his grandson, a senior soon to graduate from LSU, and his caregiver daughter, who goes to work almost every day despite the pandemic. “While I worry about their health and safety, I am mourning the loss of a year of my life at a time when I don’t have too many years left,” he said. ....

BATON ROUGE - A recent audit of the Louisiana Department of Health Office of Public Health (OPH) revealed a lack of procedural efficiency that may impact its reporting of COVID data statistics.
According to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor s Office, auditors who examined the reliability of the data reported on the OPH’s COVID-19 Dashboard found that while the organization has processes in place to ensure data on the number of positive cases and deaths are not over-reported on the dashboard, it does not have a process to make sure the laboratories handling COVID-19 testing submit complete results or submit test results in a timely manner. ....

Louisiana Hospitals Put Extra COVID-19 Vaccine Doses To Use, But Distribution Started With Hiccups

State health officials said they may be able to administer more than the 39,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine they expected to receive this week.
Dr. Joseph Kanter, head of the Louisiana Department of Health’s COVID-19 response, said health care workers got a bit of a surprise as they administered the first doses of the long-awaited vaccine.
“Pfizer put a little bit of lagniappe in the vials,” Kanter said. “Hospitals are finding an extra dose in the vials here and there.”
Kanter said it s fairly typical for vaccine manufacturers to slightly overfill their vials. And depending on the gauge of needle and amount of saline used in dispensing the dose, people distributing the COVID vaccine are finding that they can get a sixth complete dose out of a vial labeled as having only five. ....

BATON ROUGE, La. â Gov. John Bel Edwards held a press briefing Thursday to give an update on the state s response to COVID-19 and vaccine distribution efforts, which he said marked the beginning of the end of the pandemic.
The briefing came after a vaccine event at Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge.
