The Seven Best Miami-Made Hard Seltzers | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

When hard seltzer first came on the scene, no one could have guessed its future as the next craft-beverage boom. But its growing popularity goes hand in hand with the trend to embrace more health-conscious drinking habits, especially among millennials.
No one knows this better than Eddie Leon, whose M.I.A. Beer Company was the first Miami brewery to make hard seltzer, debuting its Hrd Wtr in 2016.
“Hard seltzers have positioned themselves at the nexus of convenience and health,” Leon tells
New Times. "It's here to stay."
These carbonated, water-based hard seltzers are essentially ready-to-drink cocktails, most ranging from 4.5 percent to 6 percent ABV. Made from either malted barley or fermented sugar — or an apple base like the one M.I.A. uses to make its Hrd Wtr+ — the breweries even boast that they're gluten-free. Most contain 100 calories or less per can.

Mightyhealthy and King Micah the Informer Release "KingMighty 2" | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Three years ago, Detroit rapper King Micah the Infamous attended a networking event at a recording studio in Miami hosted by producer Illmind. There, he met Mightyhealthy.
The event was an opportunity for rappers and producers to meet at the studio and play their music for the group.
“Since it’s Miami, I was prepared for the Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy, Slip-N-Slide type of vibe," King Micah recounts. "I’m from Detroit so I’m coming from far left of that. I still took my chances and played some of my music. That’s how I met Mightyhealthy. He went after me and played something that was super grimy and super boom-bap. I’m like, ‘Yo, we need to link.'"

Interview With Streetwear Brand GPC Miami Founders | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

“I have this theory, and I’m a firm believer that love is unconditional,” he says, explaining GPC's ethos. “The opposite of love, which is hate, is conditional. So hate is something that we’re taught. I think that’s why people resonate with us. [Love] is rooted within us especially as Black people.”
His answer was more than just a theory — it’s the cornerstone of GPC's designs.
“I think with the times we’re living in right now, a lot of people can relate to it,” Wint elaborates. “It gives people a voice without speaking. Some people are afraid to voice how they feel because they don’t want to be looked at in a different light, so our pieces help translate that.”

Cindy Hutson Hosts South Beach Wine & Food Fest's First Beer Dinner | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

With an inherited passion for cooking but no formal training, Hutson was reticent to take the role at her friend's new venture. After some prodding — and plenty of unwavering support for her home-cooked meals — she acquiesced, taking the helm of the meager 100-square-foot kitchen to offer Jamaican-inspired fare in the heart of Miami Beach.
"It was all his fault," Hutson says of her introduction into life as a professional chef. "I cried every day for three months straight in the beginning. It was such hard work, and I didn't really know that I was doing anything right."

Miami will face off against the seventh-seed Celtics — who they now lead by two games in the standings — again on Tuesday night, in a game that has massive implications on which team will take part in the NBA Play-In Tournament that follows the completed regular-season schedule.
Yes, for those of you who have only been half paying attention to this awkwardly produced NBA season, there is a postseason before a postseason. May Madness, if you will. This is

Activists Accuse Atlantic Sapphire Salmon Farm of Animal Cruelty | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Karl Oystein Oyehaug, chief finance officer of Atlantic Sapphire, tells
New Times the salmon are raised in optimal conditions, where they're safe from wild fish diseases and maintained with water temperatures and currents similar to their natural habitats, keeping them healthy.
But a series of mass mortality events at the Bluehouse over the past year has led a nonprofit group to question how safely the fish are actually kept.
In an April 21 letter addressed to two state agencies that oversee farming and animal-cruelty complaints, animal-rights advocates from the nonprofit organization Animal Outlook outlined a series of incidents at Atlantic Sapphire's Homestead facility wherein a total of 800,000 salmon died prematurely and, according to the advocates, were subjected to unnecessary cruelty by the company.

No Appointment for Walmart, Sam's Club, and CVS COVID Vaccines | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Just as demand for the COVID-19 vaccine has dropped, it has become easier to get the shot if you want one. Vaccine access has expanded from government-run sites to big-box stores and retail pharmacies, many of which are no longer requiring appointments.
This week, all Walmart and Sam's Club pharmacies in Florida began administering vaccines on a walk-in basis. Stores are offering the Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines, depending on supply. At Sam's Club, a membership isn't required to get the shot.
"Widespread vaccination is the only way we will eventually end the pandemic and help our country reopen, and we don't want anyone to get left behind as we enter this new chapter in our fight against COVID-19," Dr. Cheryl Pegus, Walmart's executive vice president of health and wellness, said in a statement.

Ch'i in Brickell Offers $1,000 Bonuses to New Employees | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Few strings are attached. New employees must be hired before Ch'i opens and they must work at least 90 days to earn the bonus.
Emi Guerra, cofounder of Breakwater Hospitality Group and a partner in Ch'i, says the shortage of hospitality-industry workers isn't limited to Miami. "It's really a national problem. Everyone in the hospitality industry speaks to each other, and this is a universal problem."
Guerra says that when the pandemic hit, employees at restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels were the hardest hit. Some filed for unemployment and are still collecting, while others have moved on to other cities or other jobs. "People had to make career changes. That's something to do with the lack of talented candidates."
