Letters: Indiana Pacers should permanently honor Bobby 'Slick' Leonard

When George Halas died, the Chicago Bears added his initials to their uniform and continue this practice to this day. Recently, we lost Bobby Leonard. He was as beloved by most Hoosiers and had a great or greater an impact on the Indiana Pacers as Halas had on the Bears. Currently, he is being honored by the Pacers with a black bar with Slick incorporated within the bar. This is for the current season only. I ask, why doesn’t the team give him his proper honor and in perpetuity place “Slick” in a stylish font on the front of all of their uniforms, say under the current Nike swoosh? It is Indiana’s team and he was a treasure of Indiana!

One limb at a time, the locally famous leaning tree came down Sept. 3. For more than 150 years, the tree stood at a 30-degree angle about 3 miles south of Franklin in the 3500 block of Airport Road. The tree’s removal was initiated after a citizen submitted a formal complaint asking the highway department to look into the safety of it. On June 4, Airport Road, also known as Nineveh Road, was closed after an initial inspection determined the tree was unsafe to drive under. Then, in June, two master arborists determined the tree was at “extreme risk” of falling. So, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners voted 3-0 to remove the tree. County officials and local artisans are still looking at ways to preserve the tree, such as a memorial.

Catalytic converters stolen from senior services van

Catalytic converters stolen from senior services van
Two catalytic converters were stolen from a Johnson County Senior Services van over the weekend.
Overnight on Dec. 26, a man reportedly cut off and took two catalytic converters on a van parked at the nonprofit’s new headquarters on Tracy Road in New Whiteland, said Kim Smith, executive director.
The entire incident was caught on outdoor security cameras, which shoot quality video in color, even in the dark, and the footage was turned over to the New Whiteland Police Department, Smith said.
Catalytic converter thefts is an ongoing problem in Johnson County and around the state, and it can be devastating to nonprofit organizations such as Senior Services which relies on just two vans for transporting area seniors and people with disabilities to necessary appointments.
