Meet Your Local Guides - New Hampshire Magazine

New Hampshire Magazine
We recently tapped into the experts from the Granite State Ambassadors to tell us about their favorite places in the state for pet-friendly, family-friendly, wheelchair accessible and healthy senior fun. These local experts have special knowledge of their regions of the state and their favorite recommendations for guests with specific needs, but first here’s some background on how the Ambassadors came to be.
As do so many great things in New Hampshire, it all began with a casual conversation between colleagues. This one took place a little more than 25 years ago.
Judi Window was executive director of the Southern NH Convention and Visitors Bureau at the time, and was sharing a vendor booth with people representing the state of New Hampshire at the Made in NH Expo. As they chatted, the state primary was ramping up. Flocks of media were arriving at the Manchester Airport where volunteers were on hand to answer questions from reporters about where ....

Gov. Chris Sununu presses for NH higher education merger

Gov. Chris Sununu says New Hampshire must move quickly to “get ahead of the crisis that is coming to its public university and community college systems.
“Where we are today is where we’ve been for 20 years and it is a dying system,” he said of the current status of the University System of New Hampshire and the Community College System of New Hampshire. “Both of these systems will fail if some sort of significant change isn’t made.”
Enrollment continues to decline in both of these systems, Sununu said. We still have two of the most expensive systems in the country. ....

Valley News - Out-of-state students left in limbo on shots

Out-of-state students left in limbo on shots
Modified: 3/31/2021 10:20:42 PM
HANOVER While the Twin States’ governors have both said they don’t plan to make COVID-19 vaccines available to out-of-state college students, the students and their supporters may prevail in the end.
Dartmouth College Provost Joseph Helble in a Community Conversation on Wednesday urged out-of-state students to “sit tight for a week or two” before planning trips home to get vaccinated as Dartmouth officials, along with leaders from other New Hampshire colleges, urge Gov. Chris Sununu to set a time frame to vaccinate students at residential colleges.
Helble said he was “cautiously optimistic” that Sununu might be convinced to allow students to receive both required shots in New Hampshire before they leave at the end of spring term. Spring term final exams end June 8 at Dartmouth and commencement is planned for June 13. ....

Sherman urges Sununu to vaccinate non-resident college, high school boarding students
By Nancy West - InDepthNH | Apr 1, 2021
Sen. Dr. Tom Sherman, D-Rye, is pictured last weekend at NH Motor Speedway giving COVID vaccinations.
CONCORD – Gov. Chris Sununu’s policy against vaccinating college students who are not New Hampshire residents applies to non-resident high schoolers 16 and older living at boarding schools here as well, according to his spokesman Ben Vihstadt.
The statement came as a surprise to state Sen. Dr. Tom Sherman, D-Rye, who has been active in the state’s response to the pandemic.
“That’s news to me,” Sherman said after a press conference Wednesday in which he and others gathered to publicly urge Sununu to change his policy and allow vaccinating non-resident college students living in New Hampshire while studying. ....

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Universities push back against out-of-state students inability to access COVID vaccine

Published: 4/1/2021 11:08:43 AM
Nick Fitzgerald, the student body president at University of New Hampshire, said he wanted to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.
Mostly to regain some semblance of normalcy in his life but also to set an example for his fellow students.
But last week, at Gov. Chris Sununu’s weekly press conference, Fitzgerald, a New York resident, learned that he and thousands of his out-of-state peers would not be eligible to sign up for a vaccine appointment on Friday with the rest of his age cohort.
“If you’re a resident of Colorado but you’re going to school here, no, you cannot get the vaccine,” Sununu said at the press conference. “You can go to Colorado and get the vaccine for Colorado residents but you will not qualify for the vaccine here. This is for permanent New Hampshire residents.” ....
