By ISMAIL TURAY JR. | Dayton Daily News | Published: May 16, 2021
DAYTON, Ohio (Tribune News Service) A bill that would outlaw the use of firefighting foam that contains a group of harmful chemicals was voted out of committee and is awaiting a floor vote in the Ohio House of Representatives.
It s not clear when House Bill 158 will go to the House floor, and its sponsor, State Rep. Brian Baldridge, R-Winchester, has not gotten confirmation that it s been selected for the upcoming session calendar, his office said.
HB158 proposes that Ohio fire departments be required to find an alternative to firefighter foam containing the group of contaminants known as PFAS. The legislation also proposes that fire departments be limited to using PFAS-based firefighter foam only for testing if the facility at which it s being used has a way to contain the chemical and prevent it from going into the environment. ....

How healthy are our local waterways and what’s being done to protect them?

Runoffs carrying contaminants from agricultural and urban development throughout Southwest Ohio are flowing into the region’s waterways, and experts say that threatens the aquatic ecosystem, drinking water, human life and infrastructure.
The problem will hit taxpayers and property owners in the pocketbooks to the tune of millions of dollars if more is not done to reduce those storm water runoffs, experts say.
“One way or another, we’re going to pay for having unhealthy streams, because if you show me an area where the streams are not doing well, then I’m going to show you an area that has probably a lot of bank erosion problems, or possibly having to deal with going in and fixing roads that are washing out and people’s backyards eroding,” said hydrologist Mike Ekberg, manager for water resource monitoring and analysis at the Miami Conservancy D ....

Dayton says it intends to sue Wright-Patterson over water contamination

By ISMAIL TURAY JR. | Dayton Daily News, Ohio | Published: April 5, 2021
DAYTON, Ohio (Tribune News Service) The city of Dayton intends to file a lawsuit against Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the U.S. Department of Defense in what it says is an effort to reduce contamination coming from the base into the city s drinking water supply.
The city recently informed Wright-Patt and the DoD in a formal letter that it will file the lawsuit within 60 days, unless the base takes immediate action to mitigate the contaminants flowing into the Mad River wellfield by May 4, according to a news release. The wellfield is one of several that Dayton uses to supply drinking water to more than 400,000 customers in Dayton and Montgomery County. ....
