WASHINGTON: A bipartisan bill was moved in the US Senate on Friday to establish duty-free export zones along the Pak-Afghan border.
The Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act “would serve as an important instrument to support that outcome,” said an official statement issued with the proposed legislation.
“The bill would establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s border regions to allow certain products from these areas to enter the US duty-free,” the statement added. “This will generate greater economic opportunity for the people in these war-torn areas and lay the groundwork for a more stable region.” ....

WASHINGTON: A bipartisan bill to promote lasting peace and generate economic benefits for Pakistan and Afghanistan has been introduced in the US Senate.
The legislation titled Pakistan-Afghanistan Economic Development Act aims to establish Reconstruction Opportunity Zones in Afghanistan and Pakistan s border regions to allow textile and apparel goods from those areas to enter the US duty-free, ultimately generating economic benefits for Afghanistan and Pakistan. The bipartisan bill was introduced by Democrat Senators Van Hollen, Maria Cantwell and Republican Senator Todd Young.
“As American troops leave Afghanistan, we have a strong interest in encouraging all parties to achieve a peaceful settlement and political reconciliation that can bring stability to this war-torn and war-weary area. Pakistan has joined the United States, China and Russia in urging the Afghan government and the Taliban to ensure that Afghan soil is not used to threaten the security of any other country.
The four nations known as the Extended Troika on Peaceful Settlement in Afghanistan are also urging the Afghan government to engage openly with their Taliban counterparts. They also want the UN Security Council (UNSC) to review the designations of Taliban individuals and entities.
“We call on all Afghans including the government of the Islamic Republic and the Taliban to ensure that terrorist groups and individuals do not use Afghan soil to threaten the security of any other country,” they said in a joint statement issued in Washington. ....

WASHINGTON: A bipartisan bill will soon be introduced in the US Senate to set up duty-free export zones along the Pak-Afghan border, says a senior US lawmaker.
The proposed legislation will allow these trade pockets, known as the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones or ROZs, to export certain duty-free goods to the United States, said Senator Van Hollen, a key Democrat on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Mr Van Hollen told a full committee hearing on the US policy in Afghanistan on Tuesday that elements within the Biden administration already support this proposal. ....
