A newborn’s cries break the expectant stillness of the delivery room. Beaming beneath her surgical mask, midwife Kimberly Moorhouse lifts the baby to the new mother’s glistening face as the sun begins to crest over the Inukjuak midwifery center in Nunavik, a remote region in northern Quebec.
A few short decades ago, such scenes were not possible in Nunavik. Starting in the 1970s, in an attempt to reduce birth complications, the government’s national health service began sending women in the community south at 36 weeks gestation, to give birth in Moose Factory (a community in northern Ontario, ~515 miles away). With no family members for support and unreliable flight options to return home, Moorhouse explained, the women sometimes had to sit alone in Moose Factory ....

The seed that became a nonprofit ocean advocacy group was planted on a cold January day in 2006, when Dave McLaughlin was told he couldn’t park on a particular road near Salve Regina University and the Cliff Walk.
He and a friend had been surfing at a popular Newport, R.I., spot at the end of Ruggles Avenue. It was a busy day in that section of the city, famous for The Breakers and other Gilded Age monuments, as three events were taking place, including one at Salve Regina University, so the surfers had to park two blocks away on Shepard Avenue. ....

Omar: Revealing the Journey

Omar: Revealing the Journey. Journalists from The Post and Courier will discuss their recent Pulitzer Center-supported reporting in Senegal at a fundraiser event on Tuesday, May 25, at 5:30pm EDT at the Gaillard Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
In an upcoming project, The Post and Courier delves into the story of Omar Ibn Said, a Muslim scholar from Senegal who, at 37, was captured and put aboard a slave ship to Charleston in 1807.
Post and Courier managing editor Autumn Phillips, projects reporter Jennifer Berry Hawes, and photojournalist Gavin McIntyre will share experiences from their journey in a panel discussion. There will be a gallery showcasing McIntyre’s photographs from Senegal.
This event was developed in connection with Spoleto Festival USA's 2022 world premiere of the opera Omar, which was composed by MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award-winner Rhiannon Giddens and is based on the life and autobiography of Omar Ibn Said.
